SEAFOOD EXPORT TO THE US AND COMPREHENSIVE AND PROGRESSIVE AGREEMENT FOR TRANS-PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP – CPTPP INCREASES SIGNIFICANTLY

(vasep.com.vn) According to the statistic from the Customs, Vietnam’s seafood export achieved US$ 606 million, increasing by 23.4% compared to last year. One of the reasons for this increase is the Tet holiday in January 2020. However, the increase of 23.4% is considered as a positive sign for Vietnam’s seafood. In which, the increase of pangasius (-21.7%), other sea fish (+46%), white leg shrimp (32.5%), bivalve increased by 43%.

For export markets, there was a positive sign for the markets of the US (+25.6%), Russia (+72%), Taiwan (+60%). Especially, export to CPTPP increased by 34%. In which, Australia increased by 1-5%, Japan is 25%, Mexico is 68%.

Export to almost other markets in January increased over the same period in 2020, but it is not considered as a positive increase since the last Tet holiday was in January.

In January 2021, some products have significant increase such as frozen fillet pangasius (HS 030462) increased by 53% and is the leading product on export value, accounting for 17% of the total value of seafood export. The second is processed white leg shrimp (PTO, PDTO, butterfly shrimp, etc.) increased by 47% and accounting for 9% of the export value; fresh and frozen shrimp, block, PTO, PDTO (HS 03061721) increased by 39% and accounting for 7.4%, chopped fish, surimi (HS 0304990) increased by 58% and accounting for 6.8%; fresh/ frozen peeled white shrimp PD (HS 03061722) increased by 56% accounting for 5.2%

Some other products that have a high increase (41-84%) such as frozen octopus (piece/whole); frozen fillet fish (tuna, mackerel, sea bass, marlin, swordfish, seabass, saba, and kingfish, etc);  processed fish, dried fish, etc. Squid, frozen cuttlefish. Other processed fish (dried fish, chopped fish, fish sauce); canned tuna; white clam, frozen cooked, boiled, steam clam; fresh/ frozen crap; seasoned fish, grilled fish (saba, tuna).

Particularly, some Vietnamese products have a high demand in the context of the Covid pandemic so the export value in January achieved a breakthrough growth. Among of them, frozen whole, piece, butterfly pangasius (HS 03032400) increased 163%, dried octopus (HS 03074921) increased by 118%; kinds of dried fish (HS 03055990) increased by 226%; Pasteurized crab, canned crap (HS 16051090) increased by 242%.

However, some products have a deep decrease like white shrimp, processed tiger shrimp, frozen breaded shrimp (HS16052930) decreased by 63%; fresh/ frozen tiger shrimp (HS03061719) decreased by 19%; frozen white shrimp (HS 03061719) increased by 33%. The decrease of these products caused by a decrease in demand for added–value processed products and is related to tightening the quarantine of frozen goods imported into China since this is the primary market of this Vietnamese product.
