Manufacturing of raw pangasius endured double impact from both the pandemic and saltwater intrusion


According to the statistic of General Headquarter of Fisheries (the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the area raising pangasius of the whole country reaches 4.530 hectares up to June 2020 (95.7% compared with the same period in 2019). The harvested area is 1,536 hectares (78% of the same period in 2019)

The output of pangasius by the end of June 2020 was estimated of 587.3 thousand tons, 86.5% of the previous same period and reaches 36% of the plan for 2020. In which, the feeding area and output concentrate in 5 provinces: Dong Thap, An Giang, Can Tho, Ben Tre, Vinh Long.

Manufacturing pangasius alevin of the provinces in Mekong Delta in the first 6 months of 2020   is stable. The whole Mekong Delta has almost 200 pangasius alevin factories (the factories raise parent pangasius), approximately 3,000 hectares of raising the pangasius alevin with the output of 0.9 billion alevins (100% as 2019); 45,000 of parent fishes were replaced so the quality is step by step improved.

In accordance with the General Headquarter of Fisheries, manufacturing, processing and exporting of pangasius tend to decrease due to the double impact of the pandemic and saltwater intrusion. The output of pangasius in 2019 reached 1.42 million tons leading to an excess of supply and difficult for selling. The dependence on export pushes the fisheries branch into a difficult situation because the orders were canceled or delayed due to the social isolation in almost the importing countries.

In the first quarter of 2020, the price of raw pangasius declined between 19,000 VND and 21,000 VND. Both farmers and enterprises were anxious about this price and it was continuously fell in the second quarter of this year. Raw pangasius in the Mekong Delta in June 2020 was decreased continuously, fluctuates 17,200 ~ 19,000 VND for the kind of 700~800 gr/fish while the production cost is 21,000 ~ 22,000 VND, decreased 40% compared with the year 2019.

The alevin price is plummeted, only 20,000 VND/kg, the farmers loss 3,000 ~ 4,000 VND/kg.

The average price of exported pangasius declined to 2.15 ~ 2.25 USD (Oct-Dec, 2019) while in March was 2.75 USD. The exported frozen fillet pangasius increased to 2.25 ~ 2.35 USD/kg in January 2010. However, it was decreased lower 2.2 USD/kg in February and March 2020 and this price was maintained up to the end of the 2nd quarter, 2020.

The raw fish price in the Mekong Delta is forecasted to maintain as recent because of the fluctuation of the world. Up to now, the pandemic still strongly impacts to import-export activities of the fish processing enterprises in the country.
