(vasep.com.vn) According to the report of the Directorate of Fisheries, in 2020, the total farming area of pangasius in the Mekong Delta is estimated at 5,700 hectares and the total output is estimated at 1.56 million tons, increasing by 6.9% compared to last year. Dong Thap, An Giang, Can Tho, Ben Tre and Vinh Long are the 5 key provinces with the largest area and production of pangasius in the whole country.
In the first half of 2020, the saltwater intrusion occurred in a long time creating difficulty for farmers to stock a new crop, fish get sick and die, productivity decreased due to the loss right at the seeding stage. Processing companies mainly buy raw fish in the chain or from enterprises, causing the inventories of farming households are quite high, so are the enterprises.
However, in the last months of 2020, when the pandemic was under control, the recovery of import markets, as well as the efforts of businesses and fish farmers, the output and export turnover, have positive changes.
In 2020, the production of pangasius in the Mekong Delta regions was stable. The whole Mekong Delta has about 120 pangasius breeding farms (which have brood fish), nearly 4,000 hectares for raising pangasius breed; producing about 2 billion pangasius breeds (equivalent to 100% compared to 2019); has replaced 60,000 thousand of broodstock, so the quality of pangasius breed has been gradually improved.
In 2020, the price of raw pangasius in the Mekong Delta dropped significantly since Covid-19 affects export activities. All main markets face difficulties with many inventories. From 26,500 VND/kg (the highest is in March,2019) dropped to 18,500 – 18,800 VND/kg (June,2020) and continues down to 18,000 VND/kg (in July/2020).
In only a half year, both farmers and fish farming businesses suffered losses since the market was congested, the inventory remained due to many countries had to apply social isolation, closings border or restaurants and hotels. Pangasius prices decreased 4,000-8,500 VND / kg over the same period in 2019.
Up to October 2020, when the market was recovered, export to some markets was more positive, then the price of raw pangasius increased to 19,500 VND/kg and up to 21,000 -21,500 VND/kg (in December,2020). This price is the same as 2019 and stable until now.
The price of frozen fillet pangasius for export and FOB in 2020 is much lower than the same period in 2019. From March to August 2020, the average export price is approximately 2 USD / kg compared to 2.38 -2.75 USD / kg in the same period last year. However, in October 2020, the export price increased to 2.35 USD / kg, higher than the same period in 2019.
At the Conference on Global Aquaculture Prospects, Rabobank gave a forecast on pangasius production in 2021 for the world. In which, farmed pangasius of Vietnam was estimated for about 40% of the total in the world with more than 1.2 million tons. However, according to evaluation from VASEP, in 2021, if Covid-19 is well controlled in the world, and commercial activities are recovered, then the farming output of Vietnam will reach at least 1.65 million tons.
